“Impressions” is a series that explores the intersection of art, domesticity, reproduction, and distribution. Through an act of appropriation, Anaïs Wenger transforms printed editions into sculptural objects encased in resin, elevating the image while simultaneously nullifying the original function of its support—the book. Centering on Monet’s Water Lilies, once an intimate portrayal of the artist’s private garden and now a globally circulated and endlessly reproduced icon, the series reflects on the commodification and dissemination of art.
As symbols of cultural capital, coffee table books underscore the tension between art as an aesthetic experience and its reduction to a decorative object for domestic consumption. By employing a détournement of traditional modes of representation, the series reclaims both the decorative and symbolic power of these iconic images, prompting reflection on their role in contemporary visual culture.
